Matthias Thiemann at the NYU Stern

Research stay in New York: Discussions and conferences

Matthias Thiemann visited Marti G. Subrahmanyam in New York at the NYU Stern from December 5th 2018 to January 5th 2019. Both researchers are team members of the international research project "Quantitative Easing and Financial (In)Stability" funded by Volkswagen Foundation.

Thiemann used his research stay to discuss and gain valuable feedback from Marti G.  Subrahmanyam regarding his paper "And nevertheless it moves… Spill-overs of unconventional monetary policies and their internalization within the transnational discourse on central banking", which is co-authored with Max Nagel. Nagel, who was a team member in Frankfurt, is now at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. Their paper discusses the changing discourse on finance post-crisis. The authors use document analysis and expert interviews to understand the shifting evaluation of the unconventional monetary policy in the transnational expert discussion from 2007-2017, as well as, quantitative textual analysis.

Hence, Thiemann also used his stay in New York to attend important research conferences on the topic of macro-finance and to interview attending macro-finance professors on the topic of the changing view on financial flows and its impact on macro-variables, to gain a better understanding of the view of academia on the topic. All in all, four more interviews have been collected for the project.
