SAFE Researcher Winta Beyene awarded Marie Curie Fellowship

The winning project examines how access to credit affects financial stability and welfare in times of economic distress

Winta Beyene

Winta Beyene, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Financial Intermediation Department at SAFE, has been awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship for her project, The Credit Safety Net and the Costs of Credit Supply Shocks. With the Fellowship, she will continue her work on banking, household finance, and sustainable finance.

In her project, Beyene examines how households manage idiosyncratic income shocks, particularly health-related shocks, during periods of tight credit supply compared to times of easier access. Beyond its impact on consumption and savings, the study explores how credit constraints shape financial coping strategies, such as asset sales, homeownership exits, and labor supply shifts. By highlighting the broader welfare implications of imperfect credit markets, Beyene’s research informs potential policy solutions to strengthen social insurance and better protect financially vulnerable households.

The European Commission funds the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program. It supports outstanding postdoctoral researchers through funding for their projects, international mobility opportunities, and career development. Beyene’s fellowship will allow her to further advance her research in financial stability and household welfare.
