Peter Andre has received the “Sturm & Drang Award” in 2024. On 8 November, he was awarded for the best publication by a young researcher at the Dies Academicus of the Department of Economics and Business Administration at Goethe University. Peter Andre is Assistant Professor for Behavioral Finance at the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE.
His award-winning publication, “Shallow Meritocracy,” featured in the Review of Economic Studies, explores how people's fairness judgments in meritocracies often disregard the influence of unequal circumstances on individual choices. Through experiments and real-world examples, the study reveals that while participants reward effort, they consistently fail to adjust for external disadvantages that shape effort levels, reflecting a superficial understanding of meritocratic fairness.
Peter Andre joined SAFE on 1 October 2023. His research focuses on people's economic expectations, perceptions, and views on fairness. Previously, Andre received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Bonn and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute on Behavior & Inequality (briq) in Bonn.
The “Sturm & Drang Prize” has been awarded annually since 2012 for the best publication by a young researcher of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Goethe University. It is endowed with 1,500 euros and the award ceremony is traditionally held at the Faculty's Dies Academicus.
