Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell
Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell, a former Executive Board member of the European Central Bank and Vice Governor of the Austrian National Bank, joined SAFE as a Senior Fellow in spring 2023. She holds a degree in economics and social sciences from the University of Vienna and brings with her extensive experience from her years of service at the Austrian Ministry of Finance. Her expertise lies in the fields of financial stability, macroeconomic policy, and financial integration.
Additionally, she chaired the Banking Advisory Committee of the European Commission and served as a member of the European Finance Committee during the period surrounding the introduction of the Euro. Notably, she led the High-Level Expert Group on Eurobills and played a key role in coordinating the evaluation of the European Stability Mechanism. Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell also served as a member of the Global Advisory Board of MUFG bank in Tokyo.
Currently, she holds positions as a Member of the Supervisory Board at Commerzbank, Vienna Insureance Group VIG, OMV, and AT&S. Furthermore, she is an Associate at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research WIFO.
