The Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE is leading a research project called "Financial and Corporate Research from a Long-Term Perspective", which is collecting, digitizing, and analyzing 150 years of historical financial and corporate data. The goal is to close gaps in the data basis of the German economic and financial system and to create new grounds for long-term economic and social analysis.

Under the leadership of Uwe Walz, Professor of Economics at Goethe University and the Leibniz Institute SAFE, research sites will be established in Frankfurt am Main and Mannheim. The project will run for 18 years.

"With this project, we are creating a new data basis. It will help us better understand historical crises and disruptions and make long-term developments more visible," explains Uwe Walz. “This is an essential foundation for science, politics and business in Germany.”

Digital technologies for historical data

The project uses modern technologies such as the possibilities of big data and machine learning for the analysis of historical data. This approach not only generates valuable insights for research, but also preserves and makes accessible important historical datasets as part of the cultural heritage.

The initiative is supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. It is part of the Academies Program and funded by the Joint Science Conference.

The Academies Program has been jointly funded by the federal and state governments since 1979/80. Its goal is to preserve cultural heritage and make it available to research and the public, increasingly in digital form.
