The Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE welcomes Karsten Müller as Professor of Macro Finance and new Head of the SAFE Macro Finance department. Müller, who is moving to Frankfurt from the National University of Singapore, focuses primarily on political economy, and data-driven economic research from a macroeconomic perspective.
“I have known Karsten for many years and have always admired the ambition, innovative approach, and breadth of his research.” says Florian Heider, SAFE’s scientific director. “His work on credit allocation, financial crises, and the macroeconomic effects of finance addresses questions that are central to SAFE’s research and policy work. At the same time, his research reaches well beyond the traditional boundaries of finance and fits perfectly with SAFE’s interdisciplinary approach. Karsten also has an exceptional ability to develop new data and use them to answer important questions. I am therefore extremely happy that he is joining SAFE and that we will now be colleagues.”
The Professorship of Macro Finance is a joint appointment with Goethe University Frankfurt. Prior to his role at SAFE, Müller served as a Presidential Young Professor at the National University of Singapore, where he was also a Research Fellow at the Risk Management Institute. He completed his Ph.D. in Business and Management at the University of Warwick and served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Princeton University.
In his research, he focuses on the intersection of finance, macroeconomics, and political economy, with an emphasis on developing new datasets. His work has been published in the leading international economics and finance journals, and he is frequently cited by media outlets such as The New York Times, The Economist, Financial Times, Time Magazine, and Bloomberg.
