SAFE researcher Deyan Radev has received two best dissertation awards: the Hochschulpreis of the Deutsches Aktieninstitut (DAI) and the Special Prize from University of Mainz in cooperation with Deutsche Bundesbank. The DAI Hochschulpreis for the best habilitation or dissertation, which is worth 10,000 euro, is awarded to young researchers who write their theses on topics related to the stock and capital markets. The University of Mainz/Deutsche Bundesbank prize is for outstanding scientific achievements.
Deyan Radev completed his PhD studies in economics at the Graduate School of Economics, Finance, and Management at Goethe University Frankfurt and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in July 2013 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Isabel Schnabel and Prof. Dr. Jan Pieter Krahnen. The title of his dissertation is “Systemic Risk and Contagion in the European Union”. It contributes to the question of how to assess systemic risk and the contagious feedback effects between euro area sovereigns and the European Union banking system by introducing a new measure of systemic risk contributions. Further, the thesis delves deeper into the issues of the transmission of sovereign default risk between periphery and core euro area countries and whether financial contagion could occur between the Western European financial markets and their counterparts in the newly admitted members of the European Union.
Radev is currently working as SAFE research assistant in the area financial institutions and for the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) as an economist in the department "International Finance and Financial Management". His research interests are in the fields of financial economics, international finance, banking and financial stability, systemic risk, contagion, sovereign default and econometrics and his current work focuses on measuring systemic risk in the financial system.
