Housing, Mortgages and Financial Intermediaries
Tim Landvoigt, Associate Professor of Finance, teaches at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is a macroeconomist who works on questions in housing, mortgage finance, financial intermediation, and fiscal policy. Tim’s work explores the interaction of housing markets with the financial sector (“The Housing Market(s) of San Diego,” AER 2016) and the macroeconomic implications of bank regulation (“A Macroeconomic Model with Financially Constrained Intermediaries and Producers,” Econometrica 2021). Tim is scheduled to teach a course on “Macro-Finance Models of Housing: Methods and Applications” in the summer of 2027 within the MSQ program thanks to a sponsoring by the Metzler Foundation.
We are excited to announce that Tim will visit the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE & Goethe University in winter term 2026/2027 to host a PhD-workshop on "Housing, Mortgages, and Financial Intermediaries" (detailed agenda will follow). The course will cover seminal papers on the role of mortgage credit and the financial sector in shaping housing markets and household balance sheets. It will advance to the modern literature evaluating mortgage design and risk sharing between households, financial intermediaries, and the government; and the most recent contributions on mortgage credit and housing affordability. Students will be expected to read and present assigned papers.
