Simone Wies receives DFG funding for a new research project

German Research Foundation supports new SAFE project on innovations in firms post-IPO

Simone Wies has received a positive funding decision for her new research project from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). Wies is Assistant Professor in the area of Household Finance at SAFE and Goethe University Frankfurt; the title of her research project is "Combatting the Wall Street Curse on Firm Product Innovation". The DFG will fund the project over the next three years.

In her research project, Wies deals with the innovation efforts of firms. Previous research has shown that companies curb innovations after accessing the stock market. This effect is attributed to short-term pressures of the stock market on firms. Wies will examine whether there are companies that continue to introduce innovations after the IPO and if so, which factors are decisive. One factor Wies analyzes, for example, is the tolerance for failure inherent in the firm’s culture pre-IPO.

Wies has held the SAFE Assistant Professorship for Marketing and Finance at Goethe University since 2014. Previously, she was a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in Durham; she received her Master's and Ph.D. at the University of Maastricht. Wies´ research interests lie in the interactions between capital markets and management decisions. She examines how capital markets values marketing decisions and innovation projects, and how these, in turn, influence the strategic decisions made by marketing managers.
