Hans-Joachim Voth Appointed Visiting Professor of Financial History 2017

Lecture on 18 October 2017 on "The Bubble Dilemma: Asset Prices in Historical Perspective"

Hans Joachim Voth, UBS Professor of Macroeconomics and Financial Markets at the University of Zurich, will hold the Visiting Professorship of Financial History at Goethe University Frankfurt’s House of Finance this year. The professorship was endowed by Metzler Bank and the Edmond de Rothschild Group in 2014 on the occasion of Goethe University's centennial.

Hans-Joachim Voth’s research focuses on economic and financial history, in particular long-run economic growth, the history of sovereign debt, causes and consequences of the Nazi Party's rise to power, and the economic history of the Industrial Revolution. His research has been published in the major economics journals as well as in books. Voth was educated in Bonn, Freiburg, the European University Institute (Florence) and Oxford where he graduated in 1996 from Nuffield College. From 1998 to 2013, he was a Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Voth has held visiting appointments at the University of Berkeley’s Haas Business School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, the New York University’s Stern School of Business and Stanford University.

At the beginning of his stay in Frankfurt, Hans-Joachim Voth will give a public lecture on the topic “The Bubble Dilemma: Asset Prices in Historical Perspective” on 18 October, 5.30 pm (video/slides). Also, he will give a seminar in the Ph.D program of the University’s Graduate School GSEFM at the House of Finance on the topic “Financial Crises – Past, Present, Future” and organize an international research conference on “Real Effects of Financial Crises” on 26 January 2018.

Professor Voth is the third holder of the Visiting Professorship of Financial History. In the context of this professorship, distinguished international experts in banking and financial history are invited to share their research insights and methods with researchers, students and the interested public in Frankfurt. Cooperation partners are the Research Center SAFE at the House of Finance and the Institut für Bank- und Finanzgeschichte. Previous Visiting Professors were Benjamin Friedman, Harvard University (2015) and Caroline Fohlin, Emory University, Atlanta (2016).
