The research program of SAFE follows a functional as well as a problem oriented perspective. Accordingly, the research activities take into account existing financial institutions and market structures but also institutional developments that emerge in consequence of market or regulatory innovations.
The research program focuses on performance parameters and functional risks of all important agent groups within the financial system: households, companies, banks, stock exchanges, states and central banks. Market risks such as instability and inefficiency are examined as well as the prospects for a lasting stability and welfare orientation of the financial sector.
The research program consists of five research areas that are linked to each other by two cross area research labs.
