Title: The Making of a Continental Financial System: Lessons from Early American History

In his presentation Vítor Gaspar will review Alexander Hamilton's answers to perennial questions: Why honor public debts? How to establish trust and credibility in financial markets? How to halt financial panics? These are also fundamental questions for Europe today.

Vítor Gaspar is a special advisor to the Banco de Portugal. He took on this position after stepping down from his office as Minister of Finance of Portugal in July 2013. Previously he headed the Bureau of European Advisers (BEPA) of the European Commission in Brussels from January 2007 to February 2010. From September 1998 to December 2004 he was Director-General of Research at the European Central Bank. He has also been Director of Economic Studies at the Banco de Portugal and at the Portuguese Ministry of Finance.
