The acronym LOEWE stands for “Landes-Offensive zur Entwicklung wissenschaftlich-ökonomischer Exzellenz” (State Inititative for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence). The initiative was founded by the state of Hessen in 2008.
LOEWE supports universities and non-university research institutions in Hessen in achieving and implementing their strategic objectives. It promotes outstanding joint research initiatives and particularly encourages intensive networking between universities, non-university research institutions and the business world.
Since the program's start, LOEWE funding has been granted to 11 LOEWE centers, 42 LOEWE research clusters and more than 228 SME projects via a highly competitive selection process. Altogether, EUR 670 million of funding has been provided so far within the scope of the LOEWE program.
The Center for Financial Studies and Goethe University Frankfurt were successful in their application for a LOEWE research center in the fifth LOEWE funding round in 2012. SAFE started in January 2013 and receives funding for a projected period of six years.
